Philately is the study and collecting of postage stamps, revenue stamps, stamped envelopes, postmarks, post cards and other materials related to postal history. A philatelist is a student or collector of postal materials and history.
Philately comes from the French word philatélie first used by Georges Herpin in Volume 1 (November 15, 1864) issue of Le Collectionneur de timbres-postes. It is derived from the Greek words philos (φίλος meaning "friend"), and ateleia (ἀτέλεια meaning "exempt from duties and taxes.")
A linguaphile is a person who loves languages and words. It is derived from the Latin words lingua meaning "tongue" and philus (which itself was originally from the Greek word philos) meaning "loving or beloved."
Is a linguaphilatelist then a stamp collector who specializes in materials related to the topic of languages or a person who studies languages related to stamp collecting? What about someone who specializes in philatelic translations and terminology? Or simply someone who just loves both languages and postal history? How about a philatelic linguist? Postal philologist? Are there any postal dialects? Philatelic onomastics?
Before we get too carried away, let's just say linguaphilately covers the love of both languages and stamps and everything related. |
